Renowned for his outstanding roles in hit series like “Grey’s Anatomy” and “Euphoria,” seasoned actor Eric Dance has publicly announced his diagnosis with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, more commonly referred to as ALS. This is a progressive neurodegenerative disease that affects the nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord. Despite the diagnosis at the age of 52 years old, Dane remains committed to his acting career.
From Early Roles to TV Fame
Dane began his career in the early ‘90s with minor roles before landing one of his most iconic characters, plastic surgeon Mark Sloane, also known as ‘McSteamy,’ on medical drama “Grey’s Anatomy.” He joined the cast in 2006 and stayed on the show until 2012, becoming a fan favorite during his time on the series.
Following his departure from “Grey’s Anatomy,” Dane pursued a range of roles in Hollywood. He played Captain Tom Chandler in “The Last Ship” which began airing in 2014. He stayed with the show for a considerable amount of time until leaving in 2018. He showcased his acting in many different characters and solidified his talent in the television world.

Recent Diagnosis
One of Dane’s most recent and notable roles is in HBO’s popular series “Euphoria.” He portrays Cal Jacobs, a complex character who has a substantial impact on the show’s narrative. His performance has been widely praised and is a beloved member among the cast.
According to People Magazine, Dane announced his ALS diagnosis on April. 10. In the interview, he expressed gratitude to have the support of his wife, Rebecca Gayheart and their two daughters, Billie Beatrice and Georgina Geraldine. “I am grateful to have my loving family by my side as we navigate this next chapter,” he shared.

Returning to the Screen
As “Euphoria” begins production of its third season this April, fans were left wondering if Dane would return to his role. However, demonstrating strength and determination, Dane confirmed that he will continue working and plans to return to set. He tells People, “I feel fortunate that I am able to continue working and am looking forward to returning to the set of ‘Euphoria’ next week.” He emphasized his passion for the show and love of his colleagues.
Dane’s decision to keep pursuing his career despite being diagnosed with ALS serves as inspiration and a reminder of perseverance.
