Money talks, but it’s up to you whether you listen to it. It is one of the most prevalent influences in our lives, and it can become a source of stress, anxiety and sometimes, even selfishness. When we put money on a pedestal, we view it as something more important than it truly is, giving it the power that it doesn’t deserve.
This chokehold is the root of negative relationships with money. Every expense no matter how small can feel like a losing battle, but the truth is: you’re going to spend money. It is a never-ending cycle that you can either accept or resist. While it’s not easy, the more selfless we become, the easier it gets to loosen its grip. By doing so, we can approach both money and life with a greater sense of fulfillment.

The Root of All Evil
Stinginess often comes across as a rude or cheap trait, but in reality, it’s fear. The fear of not having enough or of not being secure, and it is paralyzing. It can make people feel as if they cannot afford to give. However, the more you cling to what you have, the faster you lose it. This applies to others as well, people are more prone to give to someone who would reciprocate.
Generosity even in small acts can start to shift your perspective about money. It doesn’t have to mean handing out hundred dollar bills, it can be something as small as covering someone’s coffee or getting a present for a friend having a hard week.

Money Can’t Buy Happiness
What you give you will receive. So next time you find yourself Venmo requesting someone $3 for something as small as an Uber ride, pause and think. When you finally let go of that fear of not having enough and learn to let go you are creating a sense of abundance. You don’t have to hold on so tightly to what you have. In return, your relationship with money, and life will only grow healthier.
Money is just a tool, one to live comfortably or pursue your passions. It is there to help you live your dreams, not take over them instead. Open yourself up to the flow of life and more often than not you will receive the same kindness in return, and if not it still creates a ripple effect. By giving we strengthen relationships while loosening the tie around our wallets.

Money does not have to control your life, by changing your mindset and embracing selflessness you free yourself from it. In the end, the more you give the more you receive whether in abundance or even just peace of mind. Yes, life is expensive, but don’t let the price tag consume you. Because in the end, you really do get what you give.
