Who says we have to wait for Halloween to go goth? Jenna Ortega’s portrayal of Wednesday Addams in Netflix’s latest series, “Wednesday,” has made everyone full of woe — in the best way possible. In just one week the series broke the record for the most hours watched by an English-language series on the platform. Much of its popularity is thanks to the brilliant performance of the protagonist played by Jenna Ortega. As the series continues to soar in popularity, people are looking to our favorite misanthrope for inspiration when it comes to hair and makeup.

As well as covering Jenna Ortega’s Wednesday dance moves, people are attempting to recreate her makeup with the tag #WednesdayAddamsmakeup garnering a staggering 41 million views on TikTok. In the show, Wednesday is seen wearing smudged black eyeliner around her eyes, giving the illusion of a subtle smokey eye, and a deep plum lip color on her persistent pursed lips. Luckily for you, we at VALLEY are going to break down Wednesday’s signature look.

Lips

In an interview conducted by “trend whisperer” Cat Quinn via Instagram, Tara McDonald, Ortega’s makeup artist on the show, revealed that Ortega is wearing a deep lip liner mixed with clear balm. Specifically, Wednesday favors the MAC Lip Pencil in the shade Nightmoth, applied directly onto Ortega’s lips with a finger to get that soft blurred impression.

Face Makeup

According to Wednesday’s world at Nevermore Academy, a paled complexion with carved cheekbones is all the rave. To nail the look, McDonald used a light face tint to stay true to Wednesday’s more natural yet muted coloring. She then went in with contour to sculpt Ortega’s sharp cheekbones.

Eyes

Wednesday’s eye makeup accentuates her Tim Burton-esque large doll eyes as she restrains her self from blinking throughout the entire series. All it takes to complete this look is three eyeshadow colors, specifically MAC eyeshadows Script, Carbon, and Glitch. McDonald begins by applying Script, the brown shade, to Ortega’s lid, crease and undereye. Next, she goes in with Carbon, the true black shade, also on Ortega’s undereye. The look is then finished with Glitch, which she used as a smokey eyeliner.

Hair

When it came time to recreate Wednesday’s hair for the series, McDonald teamed up with the shows director Tim Burton to create a fresh take on the classic character. The show stayed true to Wednesday’s signature long thick black braids, but unlike earlier renditions of the character, Burton and McDonald added fringey bangs for a modern twist. It’s safe to say that this was the perfect choice with many TikTok users already cutting bangs to replicate Ortega’s look.
