Why It Is OK to Repeat an Outfit

AnaElmasllari_BorrowFromTheBrits“Lizzie McGuire, you are an outfit repeater!” is one of the most memorable, and possibly horrific, quotes from The Lizzie McGuire Movie. Lizzie got called out by Kate for re-wearing a dress to their graduation, which is a huge fashion no-no. Or is it?

What to wear and what not to wear, is sometimes lengthy decision process that girls struggle with on a regular basis. How do you decide what to wear? More importantly, can you justify wearing an outfit you already wore earlier that month? Will anyone notice? Valley understands it’s not always easy to answer these questions, but we are here to tell you one thing for sure: it is OK to repeat outfits!

All girls are guilty of saying something like, “do you think anyone will notice if I wear the same thing I wore earlier this month?” The answer to this question is no. It was always an unwritten rule to not wear the same outfit, but that’s changing, as fashion rules always do.

We’re college students—we don’t have the money to buy new clothes every month when we run out of outfits. Sorry, we can’t all be like Kim K. with infinite amounts of clothing and closet space. Don’t worry though, the odds are small that anyone will even realize you’re wearing the same t-shirt to class that you did two weeks ago. And as Lizzie pointed out to Kate, being an “outfit rememberer” is just pathetic.

College is obviously nothing like high school. There aren’t any “popular girls” walking around the hallways writing down descriptions of girls’ outfits so they can call out outfit repeaters.  Ain’t nobody got time for that. People have better things to do with their time than to even take note of what others are wearing, unless of course it’s an outfit they’re admiring.

Plus, there are several ways to change up what you’re wearing even if it’s the same thing. If you own a shirt that you’re absolutely obsessed with, don’t be afraid to wear it more than once! You can certainly pair your favorite top with various bottoms and accessories to match. No one will even realize it’s the same if you style it differently.

While you don’t want to continuously wear the same thing week after week, it is acceptable to wear the same piece of clothing more than once. Look, Taylor Swift did it and she was photographed both times she wore it. She doesn’t have a clothing shortage in her closet, but she obviously loves to show off that red sweater and she’s not hiding it. The moral of the story is: don’t be scared to wear what you love because no one will notice (in a good way).
