Everyone is familiar with the excuse that anytime a woman does something wrong they respond with “I’m just a girl.” This has enraged men to think that we are somehow degrading ourselves to being incapable of everyday tasks.
Women laugh at that stereotype that men have tried to identify us with because it simply could not be farther from the truth.
Yes, I am “just a girl” and because of that, I have the right to wear ruby red lipstick, too high of heels and get too drunk on GNO.
It’s Something They Can’t Take Away
There are all those songs growing up on Disney channel meant to inspire girls at a young age to embrace their pink hearts. One of the ones I remember humming to for longer than I’d like to admit was “What A Girl Is” by Dove Cameron. It is the type of song that connects women of all ages to each other.
Now in college, there are just some things girls aren’t ready to let go of. Like making a slideshow to present your holiday wishlist to your family or getting up at the crack of dawn to be the first to try Starbuck’s new holiday menu.
It is just our right of passage as women to get excited about these things. Traditions are made for a reason and brands know how to appeal to the excitement of the little girl inside of all of us.
It is also our right of passage to be emotional. That is another thing that has been stamped on women since the beginning of time. Who on earth came up with the idea that being emotional was a bad thing?
Yes, we are going to cry if you say something mean when we’re drunk and yes we are going to ask if someone is mad at us ten times before the answer sounds genuine. And no we will not say sorry for having a heart.
And Thank God For That
Being a woman makes the little things in life all the more exciting. The excuse to be able to talk about the same boy for two weeks until your friends tape your mouth shut is a luxury that not everyone has.
I encourage you to actually make it more known that your day to day actions reflect your identity as a woman. It is truly our right of passage to flip through a magazine, gossip with our girls and quote the movie Pretty Women.
Let us know @VALLEYmag on all platforms what your favorite right of passage is!
