No One Likes A Copy-Cat

As babies, most twins are forced to wear matching outfits so “twinning” is a universal phenomenon. Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen are an iconic set of twins who have been in the spotlight since they were kids. They are known for their impeccable style and matching their outfits. This set of twins changed the game for simple twinning with an added twist.

Same Vibe, But Different

This phenomenon has spread around the world and is known as “Mary-Kate and Ashley matching.” This type of fashion style entails the concept of matching, but not wearing identical outfits. It occurs when you want to look like your friends got together and decided on a sort of theme for the night, but each added their own personal touch to it.

It’s fun because everyone will know who your pack is, as you are all dressed in the same vibe, but they can tell you apart in the crowd. Say you see a group of people in country style clothes with cowgirl boots, hats, flared jeans, all that jazz. You can tell they coordinated to dress a certain way, but didn’t plan to wear the same articles of clothing.

At first this may seem like a curated stiff concept, but sometimes you’ll find yourself “Mary-Kate and Ashley matching” subconsciously with your friends. It starts off when you ask your friends the typical “What are you wearing?” question to get a sense of what the vibe will be like.

You don’t want to over-dress, but you don’t want to under-dress. What ends up happening is that you end up being inspired by your friends’ outfits and curating yours to look similar.

Eventually, you can go from casually being inspired to getting together and planning a vibe for the night. Say today we should dress in street style, or let’s wear a certain type of pants. Sometimes, you’ll realize you showed up to a place with your best friends and you just match unintentionally. It’s funny, but it works.

Whether you are coordinating an outfit for a formal event, a trip to the grocery store, lunch, or the beach, Mary-Kate and Ashley matching is the way to go. You could go the route of choosing an era and dressing it up, or dressing it down. For example, you could wear matching Juicy Couture tracksuits in different colors, or you could go black tie.
