At a Big Ten school, it can be difficult to curate a truly unique and spirited outfit for game day, due to the sheer volume of people attempting to do just that.
Maybe in the past, you’ve been to McLanahan’s and bought a navy baby tee, which you paired with a flowy white skirt and cowboy boots. You were so excited about the fashionable ensemble that you stepped on the CATA bus to get to your tailgate and saw a girl wearing a flowy white skirt. Your eyes drifted upward in disbelief, and oh no! She was wearing the same darn McLanahan’s top that you’d just bought.
Don’t get us wrong, there’s nothing wrong with a little twinning, but some Penn Staters thrive off unique fashion choices. Thus, the only way to ensure outfit individuality for your tailgate and the big game is to roll up your sleeves and do a little DIYing. Here are some easy projects that VALLEY has brainstormed to give you some inspiration.
Patchwork
Got the baby tee bug? Take a plain white or blue baby tee and lay it out on a table. Cut out patches from fabric in different shades of blue or Penn State prints in the shape of stars, hearts or the letters PSU. Arrange your patches in a way that you love and adhere with iron-on adhesive, fabric glue or sew it on for a cute and crafty look.
This method works for any garment, not just baby tees! VALLEY loves the patchwork look on denim skirts, overalls and more. Get creative with it!
Ribbons and Bows Galore
Is a piece of your outfit missing a little spice? It’s most likely just missing a bow or ribbon! Use cream lace ribbon coupled with blue ribbon to create bows on cowboy boots, blue and white stripe overalls or even adhere them to your pants pockets and seams. Bows are an accessory, so treat them as such!
Utilizing Fun Bandana Styles
Bandanas are not just for wearing on your head. You can create belts out of blue and white bandanas, roll them up and add charms to create necklaces, fold them up into tube tops and so much more. You can even sew together pieces of your leftover patchwork fabric to create your own bandana to use for any of these styling methods!
Enhancing Penn State Overalls
The classic blue and white striped overalls seen at any PSU football game are an absolute closet staple. However, it seems everyone has the same one. Make yours unique by cutting the pant legs to a jort length, transforming them into miniskirt overalls with extra fabric or adding patches and ribbons.
