Jelly Shoe Déjà Vu

Obrien_GelliesFashion is all about creation and expression, and is usually ahead of its time. Trends for fall are usually debuted in the winter months, and designers are already planning next year’s lines for Fashion Week. But sometimes, past decades come full circle. Retro and vintage trends influence the street style in subtle ways – even if they’ve gone completely out of style.

One “fashion” piece we never thought would come back? Jelly shoes. That’s right – the same ones we all wore as little girls to match our fairy wings and princess tutus. The late 90’s and early 2000’s have returned with a vengeance, and these shoes aren’t going anywhere any time soon.

Jelly shoes are often featured in fashion companies including Top Shop, Asos, and Urban Outfitters, but can sometimes be hard to style. The most popular looks come in sandals or clogs – not your first idea of high fashion. But when given the chance, jelly shoes can be taken further than you think.

“Pairing jelly shoes with a spring floral dress or jean shorts and a tank top is always a good idea. The clear-colored shoes are the best because they’re extremely versatile – you can pair them with anything. It definitely takes someone who is willingly to take risks with fashion to work them, so you have to be willing to do that,” says Connections employee Natalie Kapustik.

When you first hear the words “jelly shoes”, Polly Pockets and hair crimping probably come to mind. But don’t be afraid to put yourself out there and transform this trend into something unique. When coupled with the perfect ensemble, as Kapustik has suggested, jelly shoes can take you far. Fashion is all about taking risks, after all. Brownie points if you pair them with some thigh-high stockings.
