Is Puma Stealing the Sneaker Spotlight in 2025?

Everybody, sneaker-head or not, can recognize that Adidas has been the center of attention in the sneaker world for a solid amount of time now. Adidas Sambas took over globally in 2023, and we still see the effects of the powerful trend lingering on sidewalks everywhere. Other shoe brands like New Balance, Asics, Nike, Onitsuka Tiger and Veja’s have had their 2023 moments as well. However, the Adidas Samba was the leading affordable, versatile shoe of the year; leaving people to wonder…what new functional sneaker will excite the people craving a Samba replacement?

It seems as though Puma is eager to fulfill that demand in 2024, and it will be interesting to see if their efforts have the effect it feels they’re reaching for.

Two Brands, One History

The history between Puma and Adidas adds context to their current brand placements in the sneaker industry. Adidas and Puma were both built by the Dassler’s; two brothers who grew up side-by-side in Bavaria, Germany and eventually became business competitors.

Sports History Weekly explained that “Three generations ago, German brothers Adolf and Rudolf Dassler parted ways in a bitter sibling quarrel. Their business was split, their family became divided, and soon enough even the town folks migrated to opposite sides of the camp.”

“This seemingly inconsequential feud in a provincial corner of Germany had enormous repercussions on what future athletes would wear on their feet. Adolf went on to found Adidas and his older brother Rudolf followed by launching Puma.”

Both Adidas and Puma are rooted in related genetics and have seen great success. This is why it’s no surprise that people are seemingly turning to Puma following the Adidas Sambas’ slow disappearance.

Recent Sneaker Events

In recent months, Puma has been releasing collaborations with artists and brands that target a range of sneaker-wearing personalities. These events prove the shoes’ versatility and appeal. Some of these collaborations include ongoing releases with FENTY, collaborations with Rocket League and 2K, and a recent drop with popular it-girl fashion brand, Danielle Guizio.

Additionally, many trend-setting celebrities have already swapped out their Adidas for Pumas. This effect is seen in recent paparazzi pictures of their streetwear outfits. A Cosmopolitan headline reported on this development simply saying, “Emily Ratajkowski green-lights Pumas as the next must-have trainer…Dua Lipa is a fan too.”
