Intentionally Inked

A first tattoo is something exciting, a physical display of self-expression that many wait years to finally be at the age where it’s socially acceptable to complete. Although this decision isn’t something that should be taken lightly, even if tattoos are extremely common today. So, how does one go about selecting a first tattoo?

To Be Meaningful or to Be Fun

While tattoos tend to be associated with a sentimental reason behind them, it’s not a necessity when deciding to dive into the ink.

When it comes to choosing a first tattoo, think about why you desire it. Is there a special moment, person or passion you want to commemorate, or do you just happen to really love hibiscus flowers and thought it would look cool on the back of your shoulder?

After you recognize the reasoning, it can be a lot easier to identify exactly what you want and what will satisfy you for years to come. Without understanding exactly why you want a tattoo, you may rush into a design that might’ve seemed cute at the moment, but in a year, you’ll be booking that laser appointment.

X Marks the Spot

Once you figure out why you want your tattoo, the next logical decision you must make is where to put said tattoo. This is almost, if not more important than the meaning behind it.

The placement dictates how public your tattoo is. You could have it hidden, only revealed to a lucky few, or you can place it somewhere obvious, so strangers you pass on the street can look at you and think “they’re cool.”

Another factor you can consider when selecting a placement is the pain of application. Certain spots on the body are more sensitive to the needle and ink. They usually recommend selecting a spot that isn’t as painful for your first time, instead of going from zero to 60.

Yet this choice is totally up to you. If you’re settled on a place that has a bad reputation for pain, go for it and don’t let the fear stop you. After all, the pain is only a few hours in exchange for a lifelong art piece.

In Good Hands

The last major decision that comes along with getting your first tattoo is finding a reputable artist. Ensuring that you research artists and select one that fits your style, while also creating a welcoming environment, is essential to having a comfortable first tattoo experience.

Take the proper time you need to find this person. Do not rush into the decision just because you’re dying to have your design already. The person you choose will then be in the hands of how the final product turns out, so make sure it’s someone you can trust and thoroughly enjoy their work.
