Guys’ Fall Fashion Guide

With the crazy great weather we’ve been having lately, it almost seems like State is going to get an extension of fall weather. For the fall, there are always the classic trends we see each year for guys, and then there are always new ideas that come in each year to change things up a bit.

Classic Look

It’s hard to imagine a fall at PSU without seeing flannel shirts everywhere. The shoe of choice also seems to be Timberland boots. Although it’d be nice to wear shorts all year long, it’s about time to pack them away for the year. If the weather continues to be as nice as it’s been, you might be able to squeeze a few extra uses out of them. Jeans are generally the direction that everyone is headed in now.

They don’t call it sweater weather for nothing. The weather is starting to get cooler, so it’s time to break out those crew necks, hoodies and quarter zips out of the closet. Vests are also a great alternative to sweaters. They fit the fall weather perfectly because they keep you warmer without getting overheated in a winter coat. Vests are an easy look to work as long as it doesn’t clash with the color of your shirt underneath. In terms of coloring, black, gray and white are always nice neutral colors that are easy to wear throughout all of the seasons. Otherwise, aim for fall colors, which include more subdued tones of green, brown, red, and orange.

Trends on the Rise

Jeans will always be a classic, but this season is a chance to maybe branch out a little and try out different colored jeans, like black, khaki or gray. Even if you stick to the color navy, jeans have a wide variety of styles that work better with some shirts than others. It should be noted that ripped jeans are also becoming more and more popular this year. It’s a way to go beyond the norm and add something a little extra. Denim is more than just jeans this season, however. Denim jackets that are a well-known trademark of the 90’s are back in style again.

Though they aren’t really new trends, they are not exactly classics either, and something should be said for a good cardigan and leather jacket. Both for very different types of weather, but equally as effective for their respective purposes. Cardigans and vests can be interchangeably worn as the weather gets cooler, and leather jackets are for the brisk and windy weather at the tail end of fall and beginning of winter.

Sometimes, though, us guys can’t seem to be bothered with fashion and opt for the easier route of sweats and a hoodie. There is a way, however, to combat putting in no effort and actually make it into an “effortless” look. Oftentimes we want to wear sweatpants, but it turns out looking like the sweatpants are wearing us. Joggers are tapered sweatpants, which will be your new best friend if you want to wear sweats, but make them look fashionable, some even with the appearance of regular jeans. They have all the feel of sweatpants, but come in a variety of colors and styles so you don’t look like you just rolled out of bed. They can go with just about any shirt, given the colors and styles don’t clash with each other.

And of course, no matter how we dress, we can never go wrong with choosing something that we picked up from Lion’s Pride or The Family Clothesline. No matter the season of the year, school pride is always in fashion. Go down to nearly any store on College Avenue and pick up a sweater to keep you warm during the weather change in Happy Valley.
