DIY De-Stress: At-Home Spa Night

JessiKorch.SpaNightAlready overwhelmed with second semester stress? Time to trade-in that textbook for a facemask, and follow these simple steps to transform your bedroom into the day spa of your dreams.

Step 1: Establish your ambiance

All real beauty queens know the importance of a good ambiance. The mood of your spa should be relaxing and give you a chance to unwind after a long day of classes. Start by determining what type of lighting makes you feel the most comfortable.  Some people prefer turning all the lights off, while others enjoy just little bit of dim light. This can be achieved by leaving on a single desk lamp. Once you’ve established your mood lighting, it’s time to choose the background music. Look no further than Pandora Radio for the perfect spa playlist. “Spa Suite Radio” combines relaxing melodies with smooth sounds to help you reach your zen.

Step 2: Prep your skin

The facial may be a day spa cliché, but don’t underestimate the power of a good pore cleanse. Begin by removing all your makeup then wash your face with a gentle cleanser like Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser ($8.39). This step prepares your skin for the mask, ensuring that pores are free of dirt and oil. After rinsing off the cleanser, gently pat your skin with a washcloth so that it’s damp, not dry.

Step 3: Choose your mask

Getting a quality facial doesn’t have to break your budget. In fact, most drugstores sell several types of masks that are super affordable. Freeman is a reliable brand that delivers a wide variety of facemasks to suit every skin type. Even better, all of their products are priced from $3.99 to $6.99. One of Freeman’s most popular masks, the Avocado and Oatmeal Clay Facial, will leave your skin feeling fresh and clean after only 10 minutes.

Step 4: Apply your mask

Making sure your skin is clean and damp, apply a generous amount of mask to your skin focusing on the T-Zone. Keep in mind that the thicker you layer on the mask, the longer the product will take to dry.

Step 5: Sit back and relax

After you apply your mask, find a comfy spot to lie down and close your eyes. Turn off your cell phone and let the sounds of your playlist fill the room. This is your time to sit back and relax without any distractions. Take these moments to focus on your breathing. When you feel that your skin is tight and the mask has dried, it’s time to move on to step 6.

Step 6: Rinse and Moisturize

Remove the dried mask with warm water and a washcloth. Be careful not to scrub your face too hard as this can irritate your skin.  Once you’ve rinsed off the mask, pat your skin so that it is dry and apply your moisturizer immediately. Skin will be soft and smooth.
