In our society, a lot of influential figures impact our decisions, how we act, and even what we wear. Whether you realize it or not, a lot of people play a role in how you dress.
It could be a direct influencer, someone who you see on a daily basis, or it could be a more indirect source, such as a public figure. Fashion icons indirectly affect how we dress, even if you aren’t necessarily looking to them for fashion advice. What they wear influences trends that are set, which in turn decides what stores have for you to purchase.
If you are a fashion connoisseur, then you are most likely cognizant of fashion icons influencing your style. We have always had iconic figures shaping our fashion, but our modern world makes it easier to be fashion influenced. Social media has changed the way we style ourselves. You are influenced each and every day when you scroll through Instagram. Reese Witherspoon, the Kardashians and Lady Gaga are major icons in our society, and their fashion can easily be imitated by scrolling through your social media feed.
Here at Penn State, it is easy to see the replication of icons’ trends and styles on campus. Valley talked to some Penn State students and fashion gurus to see which fashion icons impact their style.
Penn State sophomore Grace Hayba says she looks to Reese Witherspoon for her personal style.
“When you see her on the red carpet, she’s always wearing something classy and timeless,” says Hayba.
Some students aim for an edgier look. Penn State sophomore Christine Laderer says she follows Kourtney Kardashian’s style.
“I feel like Kourtney is following the trends, but she looks most put together,” says Laderer.
Others take their fashion advice from a variety of figures to create a style with unique contributions.
“I have three fashion icons: Kendall Jenner, Selena Gomez and Kourtney Kardashian,” says Jordan Cioppa, a Penn State sophomore. “They follow the current trends, but they add their own touch and are very chic.”
We also got the chance to talk to Valley’s Fall 2016 cover star Michael Grasso to see where he gets his inspiration. Grasso’s trendy and artistic style is influenced by an array of different public figures and designers.
“The icons I most look towards are Bcalla, Discount Universe, Jeremy Scott/Moschino and Hanaquist on Instagram,” says Grasso. He says he also admires “most of the classical couturiers,” such as Fendi, Dior, Louis Vitton and Alexander McQueen.
Next time you’re scrolling through your social media feed, pay attention to who is influencing you and your style. Maybe, you’ll pick up a new trend in the process!
