From Nickelodeon to stadiums, Ariana Grande has made herself a name in the industry. More specifically, a name full of controversy; Grande has had a long line of public relationship drama that makes you either love her or hate her. With the release of her newest album, “Eternal Sunshine,” she has officially closed the book on her divorce with Dalton Gomez. Including two short films.

Of The Spotless Mind
The latest album of Grande’s pays homage to one of her favorite movies, “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.” This 2004 film focuses on two individuals, played by Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, undergoing procedures that erase memories from their minds after a severe breakup.
Grande has made her obsession for Jim Carrey very known to the public and this tribute in her album is clear as day. In fact, the music video for one of the songs, “we can’t be friends (wait for your love),” draws direct inspiration the movie. The plot reminisces with how Grande is coping from her love life complications, attempting to erase the memories and move forward.

The Relationship
The album talks about love, heartbreak and grief of not only a relationship, but a relationship with a person you thought you knew. With her divorce from Gomez, the public went nuts, digging into her life from that point on. With the song, “don’t wanna break up again,” Grande confronts how he treated her towards the end of the relationship with the lyrics, “I fall asleep crying, you turn up the TV, you don’t want to hear me.”

Not only has she used the album to confront her ex-husband, but also the media for speculations on her personal life. The song “yes, and?” targets people who have called her a home-wrecker and cheater for her new relationship with co-star Ethan Slater. Slater, who was previously with and co-parented his child with ex-wife, Lilly Jay. Jay has taken to social media to attribute both Slater and Grande for ruining her marriage to Slater.
Brighter Days Ahead
After the release of the deluxe version (“eternal sunshine: brighter days ahead”), Grande also rolled out a short film based on the album. Throughout the short film, we see an older version of the popstar named Peaches, going through the aftermath of erasing her memories. As she views four specific memories that she had planned to erase, the audience views how she sees her life now since moving forward from her relationship.

Towards the end of the film, Grande shares inspiration from the movie, “Frankenstein,” with a scene of a man (her father) in a lab trying to rebuild her. Alluding to how her father has helped her with healing from the chaos shows the mental growth she has accomplished. With horrid heartbreak comes the power of healing, or in other words, brighter days ahead.
