It can be easy to pair the statement pieces of your outfit with a neutral item — jeans and white tees never fail to pull an outfit together. Once you get into the routine of grounding your outfits with passive pieces, you might have a hard time coming up with new ways to change your look. However, animators have already done the job for you.
What makes cartoon characters iconic? While their signature catchphrase and the sticky situations they get into are memorable, there is one thing about most that never changes: their outfit. These outfits have iconic color combinations that we associate with the characters. While that might sound a little off-putting when you’re thinking of integrating them into your look, styling the colors with a keen eye can make them flow seamlessly.
Cosmo and Wanda
The signature colors of the “Fairly OddParents” fairies, pink and green, aren’t just eye-catching because of their association with the show. Pink and green are opposite of each other on the color wheel, making them pop when paired. Integrating this combination in your outfit will make you stand out, whether it’s a bubblegum, hot or pastel pink with mint, lime or forest green.
Ariel
“The Little Mermaid” follows a young mermaid, Ariel, through many obstacles and many outfits. However, the ball gown and shipwreck dress are no comparison to the mermaid’s fiery red hair and purple shell bra. With the saturation of both hues being turned up to 11, creating an outfit to match should follow suit. Red and purple can seem daunting to wear together at first, but even Lady Di saw the vision.
Daphne and Velma
The mystery of what pieces to pull together from your closet could be solved by looking at the best-dressed members of the “Scooby-Doo” gang. Daphne, loving fashion herself, is always seen wearing a green neck scarf and purple dress. Velma has an iconic look too, sporting an orange sweater, red skirt and orange socks. Wearing these color combinations on your next outing would make you look cute, and maybe help you solve a mystery along the way.
The Pink Panther and Inspector Clouseau
If you’re on the other side of the mystery, you might want to try out a pink and brown look inspired by “The Pink Panther.” While you can’t credit a monochrome pink set to the panther, tying in the brown from the detective’s trench coat can create the full look. Next time you see these colors in your closet, consider layering them to mimic the series.
Lumpy Space Princess
While you can’t be the princess of Lumpy Space, you can replicate the character Lumpy Space Princess from “Adventure Time.” This is a perfect color combination for someone who is sassy and might be on their phone a little too much, just like the cartoon character. To achieve the lumpy look, try finding a big purple sweater that is almost cloud-like and a small yellow accessory for your head.
We shouldn’t underestimate the color choices that the animators for these shows and movies made. Styling these colors correctly can open up a new world of opportunities.
