Though fashion is all about creativity and freedom of expression, there are basic, unspoken rules everyone knows. Black and navy together? Watch your step. Legs or cleavage? Never both. And always keep your LBD on hand…blah, blah, blah.

Stilettos, sling backs, kitten, and cone heels are not common words used in the college male vocabulary. Are men oblivious to women’s fashion trends or are they just not interested in them? Are men even aware to what women are wearing on their feet?

One thing I learned in my first year at Penn State is to wear the right shoes. I walked away at the end of the year with plantar fasciitis…ouch. In very simple terms, it is a tear/strain in a ligament underneath the arch of your foot. So yes, it is very painful and it makes walking long distances uncomfortable.

During the holiday season, and especially during New Years, metallic colors are a huge hit. From sparkly blacks to bright gold shades, almost every product from heels to makeup came in some sort of metallic palette this past winter.

The holidays shouldn’t be your only excuse to go into sequin overload. As A Little Princess once taught us, all girls are princesses. Instead of actually wearing a tiara (because we all know that’s just going too far), slip some sparkle into your everyday look.

Valley is ringing in the New Year in a completely new way… through a male perspective. Winter is a time for slacking off with our wardrobe choices. It is much easier to throw on a pair of sweatpants and a sweatshirt as we head to our 8 a.m. classes than to worry about what looks “good.” Here are some suggestions on ways men can dress up this winter season.

Leather is a thriving fashion trend and it doesn’t look like it’s going away any time soon. Celebrities rock it on the red carpet, average college kids wear it on a night out or during the day, and moms wear it in the work place. It’s everywhere.

A fashionable, durable pair of jeans can be a girl’s best friend. They can be used for almost any occasion – a night out with your closest friends, dinner with your boyfriend’s family or even for surviving a long day of classes.

New Years Eve is a big night for everyone. There is a ridiculous amount of planning that goes into picking the venue, which group of friends to go with, and who that lucky person receiving your 12 a.m. kiss will be. New Year’s Eve is an overrated, over-planned, and over-hyped night when it comes down to it.

Socks are to winter what pedicures are to summer: a bright personal touch to complete any outfit. One of Valley’s favorite things about this chilly weather- other than peppermint mocha latte’s from Starbucks and festively decorated downtown, is being able to bundle up in a stylish way.

As we progress through the later years of college, our work experiences become increasingly professional. Though the commitment of real world jobs tends to be frightening, we do get the opportunity to dress the part of serious, hardworking businesswomen.

Fabletics – fabulous athletic wear. Who doesn’t want to look fashionable and stylish while working out? You can say goodbye to those old gym clothes that are not the least bit attractive.

The only other time I’ve ever gone Black Friday shopping was for a family my mother and I took under our wing from her Adopt-a-Family Foundation, and we had a mission—find as many clothes as possible and if we had time, a few awesome toys as well.

One positive aspect of the arctic-like temperatures that State Colleges promises to bring post Thanksgiving break, is the need for cute winter accessories. This season, it’s all about volume and statement pieces, which is exemplified in the winter accessories.
