Finally the 2025 Oscars have come and gone! This year we saw some really amazing outfits and performances. Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo started the night with an amazing performance and the red carpet was buzzing with beautiful gowns and amazing fashion. We saw a lot of rights this year… but we also saw a lot of wrongs. From controversial outfits, speeches and mistakes that the public was quick to take to social media to point out, there is lot to talk about.
Snubs and Praises
Many were surprised and shocked at the praises and snubs from the Oscars. This year we saw multiple five star performances and blockbusters that took over the nation, yet many were left out of the praise at the Oscars.
The Bob Dylan biopic “A Complete Unknown,” staring Timothée Chalamet went zero for eight nominations. Many were shocked considering the amount of buzz Chalamet was creating for the movie. He went on TONS of late night show interviews, went viral for his questionable red carpet outfits, and even became the second person ever to host and preform on “Saturday Night Live.” Many thought that this would be Chalamet’s chance to achieve EGOT status, but the Oscar committee seems to always hate a blockbuster.
Speaking of blockbuster, “Wicked” left the award show with only two award out of their ten nominations. The movie grossed over $700 million worldwide and won Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. Fans were outraged as Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo both lost in their respective categories of Best Supporting Actress and Best Actress. Although each actress didn’t win in their category, both were happy for the historic wins that came out of the 2025 Oscars. Paul Tazewell, the lead costume designer for “Wicked,” became the first Black man to win an Oscar in that category.

It is easy to be confused on why these two movies, that seemed to produce so much revenue and buzz, didn’t see the same praise at the Oscars as they did in the ticket offices. It is well known that the Oscar committee isn’t huge fans of the large blockbusters, but will oftentimes award these movies in other categories that aren’t as notorious as Best Actor/Actress or Best Score.
So who won some of these awards? “Emilia Pérez” took up two of these spots, and many fans are not happy about it.
Speaking of “Emilia Pérez”…
“Emilia Pérez” might just be the most talked about movie this year, and not for good reasons. After the movie was released, moviegoers took to the internet to express both their confusion and frustration with the movie. Now we won’t dive into all of that today, but many thought that the amount of praise the movie was getting was laughable.
The film is about identity and rebirth, specifically attempting to highlight and uplift the trans community. It was nominated for almost every single major category, but only took two home: Best Supporting Actress won by Zoe Saldaña and Best Original Song for “El Ma.” Although the movie focuses on the trans community, none of the winners from the film thanked or acknowledge the trans community in their speeches.

The songwriters who won for “El Ma,” Clement Ducol, Camille and Jacques Audiard, has an interesting speech that people are still talking about. After thanking many people and talking about the themes and ideas of the movie (again not mentioning the trans community) Camille Audiard bursts out into song, trying to get the audience to join in, and nobody did. This left the internet with a video ultimately deemed incredibly cringeworthy.
In Memoriam Snubs
Not only were their snubs in the nominations and awards of films, but there were also snubs in the “In Memoriam” portion of the Oscar’s broadcast. Each year the Oscars holds an “In Memoriam” section that honors the entertainment figures that have died over the past year. This years section included entertainers such as David Lynch, Maggie Smith and James Earl Jones. Although this emotional and moving segment offered a great remembrance for some of Hollywood’s most lived, many were shocked that Michelle Trachtenberg was left out.
Trachtenberg is known for many roles including “Harriet the Spy,” “Ice Princess” and “Gossip Girl.” The actress tragically died on February 26th, just four days before the Oscars. Although it may be hard for the Oscars to include a segment for every person that has passed in the year, fans were sadden at the exclusion of Trachtenberg.
