Class gifts at Penn State date back to 1861, when the graduating class gifted a portrait of the university’s first president, Evan Pugh. Today, this historic portrait can be found in Old Main. Since then, Penn State has received 152 class gifts, with the university celebrating its 170th anniversary this upcoming spring semester.
What Is The Class Gift For The Class of 2025?
On Wednesday, Nov. 13th, the 2025 class gift was announced at the HUB. The options included the Disability Resource Endowment, the Dr. Keiko Miwa Ross Student Farm East Entry Gateway Renovation and Support for the Student Mental Health and Wellness Fund and Flourish Penn State. During the event, it was revealed that the class gift for the graduating class of 2025 is the Dr. Keiko Miwa Ross Student Farm East Entry Gateway Renovation.
The East Entry Gateway renovation at the Dr. Keiko Miwa Ross Student Farm aims to enhance the entrance, creating a more functional and welcoming space. This renovation not only beautifies the gateway but also improves accessibility. Established in 2016, the Student Farm is centered on sustainable agricultural systems, providing students with hands-on education while also donating food to the campus dining halls. Producing over 16,000 pounds of produce annually, the farm embodies the university’s commitment to sustainability. This class gift reflects Penn State’s dedication to both sustainability and accessibility.
What Is The Student Philanthropy Network?
The Student Philanthropy Network is leading fundraising efforts for the class gift, with a goal of $30,000. As of Saturday, Nov. 16th, $60 has been raised. Donations can be made at give.psu.edu. Formed in 2019, the Student Philanthropy Network works alongside the Division of Development and Alumni Relations (DDAR) to promote philanthropy at Penn State through campaigns and events, striving to create a positive giving experience.
This year’s class gift coordination is led by Benjamin Pawlowski, who is the 2025 Class Gift Coordinator. The executive board also includes President Emma Pulkowski and Vice President Molly Gibbard.
Why Does The Class Gift Matter?
The class gift represents Penn State’s mission of giving back to the community. Penn State is built on six core values: integrity, respect, responsibility, discovery, excellence and community. With these values in mind and a commitment to school spirit, this class gift showcases the pride of Penn State. Past class gifts have included an endowment for Penn State’s Center for Counseling and Psychological Services, the Lion’s Pantry Program Student Endowment, Support for Complete Penn State and the UPUA Basic Needs Endowment. This year’s class gift will be the first physical gift since 2018, which was the Penn State Alma Mater Display in the HUB.
Class gifts have likely played a role in your Penn State experience, whether through the Nittany Lion sculpture or an endowment that has impacted your time on campus. If you want to support the 2025 class gift, consider donating at give.psu.edu. Continue the We Are spirit!
